How Servo Hot Plate Welding Works

  1. Load and locate the parts: Upper and lower fixtures hold the two components in a repeatable position.
  2. Heat the weld ribs: A temperature-controlled hot tool contacts both joint surfaces until the specified melt depth is reached.
  3. Transfer: The tool retracts and the softened parts move together. A short, consistent transfer time helps prevent premature cooling.
  4. Join under controlled motion: Servo motors regulate displacement, speed and final position while the molten ribs form the weld.
  5. Cool under pressure: The fixtures maintain alignment until the joint is stable enough for unloading.

Suitable Parts and Materials

Servo hot plate welding is commonly evaluated for PP, PE, ABS, PA and other thermoplastics, including selected filled grades. Typical applications include automotive reservoirs, battery and filter housings, appliance components, fluid-management parts and other assemblies with three-dimensional or irregular weld paths.

The method is especially useful when the part is too large for ultrasonic welding, the joint requires controlled melt collapse, or the geometry makes vibration welding difficult. Resin compatibility, fillers, wall thickness and weld-rib design must still be validated with production-representative samples.
