What Determines Cycle Time and Machine Cost?

Cycle time and machine cost are connected, but reducing cycle time does not always require the most expensive automation. The correct equipment concept balances output, quality, labor, flexibility, maintenance and project risk.

What makes up the total cycle time?

Total cycle time normally includes part loading, presence checks, clamping, process movement, heating or welding, holding or cooling, inspection, unclamping and unloading. Robot travel, safety access and data recording may also be included.

Process-related factors

Heating and cooling

Hot plate and infrared applications often require controlled heating and cooling. Material, weld area, wall thickness and joint mass influence the time needed to reach and stabilize the correct temperature.

Weld distance and number of points

A longer weld path, more ultrasonic points or multiple heat-staking posts can increase processing time. Some operations can run simultaneously, while others need sequential movement to protect quality.

Holding and inspection

Parts may require holding time after welding to stabilize the joint. Leak testing, vision inspection, force-displacement monitoring and code reading can add value but also add seconds to the total cycle.

Equipment concept factors

Single station or multiple stations

A single-station machine is simpler and usually costs less. Rotary tables, shuttle systems and parallel stations can separate loading from processing and increase output, but they add tooling, guarding, controls and integration work.

Manual or automatic handling

Manual loading may be suitable for lower volumes or large parts. Robots, conveyors and automatic feeders can reduce labor and improve consistency, but the business case should include product life, volume, changeover and maintenance capability.

Tooling complexity

Part variation, complex locating, active clamps, sensors, cooling channels and quick-change requirements affect tooling engineering and manufacturing cost. Tooling often has a major influence on both quality and final machine investment.

Controls, safety and plant standards

PLC and HMI brands, servo axes, process monitoring, data traceability, vision systems, safety scanners, light curtains and plant communication standards all affect cost. Equipment for multiple countries may also require different electrical and documentation packages.

Validation and project scope

Sample trials, design reviews, capability studies, FAT, customer documentation, installation, training and on-site commissioning should be included when comparing quotations. A lower equipment price may not include the same validation or delivery scope.
